6.5: Nyikina Mangala Mardoowarra (Fitzroy River) Sustainable Livelihoods on Country Case Study

Abstract

This participatory, action-based research project will document the factors that have contributed to the Nyikina Mangala Traditional Owners' sustainable livelihoods agenda to date. The project will also work to build local leadership and governance capacity, develop and implement a number of strategic management plans, and document barriers, strategies and actions to achieve Indigenous sustainable livelihoods on country.

Outcomes

Outcomes sought from this Case Study will include:

  • Documentation of the collaborative research process;
  • Identification of improved management and livelihoods on river country, and the strategies and actions required to achieve those improvements; and
  • Development of best practice policies, protocols, strategies and actions for sustainable Indigenous livelihoods associated with rivers in the Kimberley and elsewhere across tropic Australia.

Where is the research happening?

The research is happening on the traditional lands of the Nyikina Mangala people that surround the Mardoowarra, Fitzroy River, in the west Kimberley region of Western Australia.

This TRaCK Project is coordinated through the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA). The Nyikina Mangala Aboriginal Corporation is managing the project.
